Virgin Voyages age and pregnancy rules

Virgin is adults-only, with a firm pregnancy cutoff and a drinking age that changes with the itinerary. Here are the exact rules, how to count your weeks, and how I plan around them.

The short answer

  • Minimum age to book and sail: 18. No exceptions for children or infants.
  • Pregnancy: you can be no more than 23 weeks and 6 days pregnant on the day you disembark, and you need medical documentation at check-in.
  • Drinking age: 21 in the U.S. and on all Alaska sailings, 18 in international waters unless the itinerary restricts it.

Age: 18 and over, every sailing

Every Virgin Voyages sailing is adults-only, and the minimum age to book and sail is 18. That covers babies and teens too: there are no family exceptions.

My tip: Traveling with someone who is 18 to 20? They can sail, but plan around the drinking-age rules below, especially on Alaska sailings.

Pregnancy: the 23-week rule

Virgin says sailors must be no more than 23 weeks pregnant by the end of the voyage, meaning you can be up to 23 weeks and 6 days pregnant on the day you get off the ship. Virgin's terms say the same thing another way: it cannot accept guests who will have entered their 24th week at any point during the voyage.

At embarkation, you need medical documentation confirming:

  • your good health and your baby's health,
  • that your pregnancy is not considered high-risk, and
  • that you will be no more than 23 weeks pregnant by the end of the voyage.
Heads up: If you do not have the documentation, Virgin will deny boarding at your expense. Count from your due date to the last day of the cruise, not the first.

Planning a babymoon? Tell me your due date and I will only show you sailings that clear the cutoff with room to spare. I would also add travel insurance that covers pregnancy-related changes.

How to count your weeks

Count to the last day of the voyage, not the first. If you will be 23 weeks and 6 days pregnant on the day you get off the ship, you can sail. If you will reach 24 weeks at any point during the voyage, you cannot (Virgin additional terms).

Example: A 7-night sailing that ends June 14. On June 14 you need to be 23 weeks and 6 days pregnant or less, which means about 22 weeks and 6 days when you board.
Bring: A letter from your doctor or midwife confirming that you and your baby are in good health, that the pregnancy is not high-risk, and your due date or gestation at the end of the voyage. Without it, Virgin can deny boarding at your expense.

Drinking age by region

Where you areDrinking age
United States ports and waters21
Alaska itineraries (whole voyage)21
International waters18, unless restricted by the itinerary
Other countries' portsThat country's local law

Anyone under the legal drinking age for the departure port and itinerary cannot bring alcohol onboard, including the wine allowance.

The health form

About 24 hours before sailing, every sailor fills out a health declaration in the Virgin Voyages app. Answering "yes" to any question sends you to a secondary screening at the terminal. Vaccine requirements depend on your itinerary and the countries you visit.

Traveling with 18 to 20 year olds

  • They can sail, and they can share a cabin with adults.
  • They cannot drink on any Alaska itinerary, or in U.S. ports and waters.
  • Anyone under the drinking age for the itinerary cannot bring the two-bottle wine allowance on board.
  • Casino age follows the same rule: 21 on Alaska sailings.

How I plan these trips

First Mate playbook

What I do for my clients

  • For a babymoon, I only show sailings that clear the 23-week cutoff with at least a week to spare.
  • I recommend travel insurance that covers pregnancy-related changes, booked soon after the deposit.
  • For groups with 18 to 20 year olds, I steer toward Caribbean or Mediterranean sailings instead of Alaska.
  • I send a reminder about the 24-hour health form, so nobody is screened again at the terminal by surprise.
