Sailing Virgin Voyages from Los Angeles

Brilliant Lady brought Virgin to the West Coast in 2026. She sails from the World Cruise Center in San Pedro to the Mexican Riviera and Baja, plus a few longer one-way voyages. Here's how I'd plan it.

By Derek Gebelhardt, Top 100 Virgin Voyages First MateFact-checked against Virgin’s official policies October 20, 2026

The short answer

  • Virgin sails from the Los Angeles Cruise Terminal (World Cruise Center), Berth 93, 100 Swinford St, San Pedro.
  • Budget 30 to 45 minutes from LAX by car, longer in traffic. Stay near the port the night before.
  • Mexican Riviera sailings in hurricane season (June to November) can be rerouted. Pack layers for a California backup plan.

The terminal and getting there

Virgin uses the Los Angeles Cruise Terminal at Berth 93, 100 Swinford Street, San Pedro, CA 90731, part of the Port of Los Angeles. It is not in downtown LA. It is about 30 to 45 minutes from LAX, and 45 to 60 minutes or more from Hollywood or Santa Monica.

  • Easiest: taxi, rideshare or a private transfer straight to Berth 93.
  • Driving: there is paid parking at the terminal. Check the Port of Los Angeles for current rates.
  • Next door: the Battleship USS Iowa museum is right by the terminal, and San Pedro Fish Market is a fun pre-cruise lunch.

How check-in works

  1. Finish "Ready to Sail" in the Virgin Voyages app for everyone in your cabin. You can only do it for sailors in your own cabin.
  2. Pick a Terminal Arrival Time in the app. Boarding generally starts around 2:15 pm, and arriving early does not get you on earlier.
  3. Arrive at your time with your passport and the credit card for your onboard account. Drop your tagged bags with the porters.
  4. Get your Band (the wristband that opens your cabin and pays for things) and walk on.

RockStar and Mega RockStar sailors get priority check-in. Sailors with Deep Blue Extras can arrive as early as 1:45 pm for priority boarding.

Where I would stay

LA traffic is the main risk, so I put clients near the port or at least on the south side of the city the night before. If you want a few days in LA first, do Santa Monica or Hollywood earlier, then move closer to San Pedro the last night.

Hurricane season and reroutes

Mexican Riviera sailings are popular in fall, which is also hurricane season in the eastern Pacific. In fall 2026, storms forced Virgin to reroute Brilliant Lady more than once. Her October 10 sailing went to Santa Barbara, San Diego and Ensenada instead of the Mexican Riviera. Virgin refunded Shore Things for the dropped ports automatically and gave each sailor in a standard cabin $100 in Sailor Loot and $200 in Future Voyage Credit.

My tip: Pack a light jacket even for "Mexico" in fall, and book independent tours with free cancellation. I explain what happens to your money in my itinerary changes guide.

Passports

Virgin accepts a passport card only on Miami closed-loop Caribbean sailings (Virgin travel requirements). On a Los Angeles round trip, U.S. citizens can use a state-issued birth certificate plus government photo ID instead of a passport. I still recommend a passport book for everyone, because Ensenada and the Mexican Riviera are foreign ports. You need a passport book for one-way sailings, such as the Panama Canal or Pacific Coastal voyages to Vancouver. More in my passport guide.

Before or after your cruise

Virgin Shore Things first

I always look at Virgin’s own tours first. You book them in the Virgin Voyages app, and the charge goes on your onboard account.

  • City of Angels Experience with LAX Drop Off, culture, history & Hollywood glam (4.5 hours, about $100 per person)
  • LA Glitz & Farmers Market with LAX Drop Off, hollywood, Sunset & local flavor (5.5 hours, about $120 per person)

With an independent tour, getting back before all-aboard is on you, so leave a big buffer.

What I do for Los Angeles clients

First Mate playbook

What I do for my clients

  • I put you in a hotel near San Pedro or Long Beach the night before, so LA traffic is not a risk.
  • In hurricane season, I book independent tours only with free cancellation, and I watch the forecast with you.
  • If your sailing is rerouted, I tell you what Virgin is offering and rebook tours for the new ports.
  • I remind you to pack layers. A rerouted Mexican Riviera sailing can end up on a cool California coast.

How I keep this guide accurate. I check every policy, fare and date against Virgin Voyages’ own FAQs and contract first, and only use cruise forums and other advisors for things Virgin does not publish, which I label as reported by sailors. I re-check each guide at least every 90 days and the same week Virgin announces a change. Last fully checked October 20, 2026. Spot something out of date? Tell me and I will fix it.
